# Chat to Markdown > Chat to Markdown is a Chrome and Edge extension that saves ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Grok, DeepSeek and GitHub Copilot conversations as Markdown files in a folder the user chooses, such as an Obsidian vault. It reads chats with the browser session the user already has and writes the files straight to the local disk; chats never pass through a server. Each chat becomes one .md file in a folder for its service inside the folder the user picked (for example "ChatGPT/2026-10-17 Lisbon food trip.md"; a subfolder for all of them can be set in Settings) with YAML frontmatter (title, source, url, id, model, created, updated, tags, project) and the conversation under "## You" and a heading with the service's name ("## ChatGPT", "## Claude", "## Gemini" and so on). Each service has its own folder, and projects (ChatGPT, Claude, Grok) and Perplexity Spaces become subfolders. Every service is off until turned on (on the welcome page or in Settings), because Chrome asks to allow each site first; the extension can reach only the sites the user turned on. A continued chat updates the same file, without duplicates: only a marked block is rewritten, so notes the user writes above or below it are kept. Every change keeps the version before (up to 100 per chat, in a hidden .chattomarkdown/history folder inside the user's folder), and the extension's reader shows them as a git-style log with a line-by-line diff: changed words highlighted, the old value of a changed property, new messages labelled. It checks for new and changed chats every 3 hours by default; the user can pick anything from every 15 minutes to once a day, a custom interval or set times of day, and limit checks to certain hours or days (Settings shows the next check). A chat is also saved when the user leaves it. A Save button next to Share on each chat site saves the open chat at once, with Copy as Markdown, Copy for another AI, Save as PDF and Save as HTML in its menu (PDF and HTML come out as the reader draws the chat: formulas, pictures, charts and Mermaid diagrams); the shortcut Alt+Shift+S (Option+Shift+S on a Mac) does the same. What it keeps: images and uploads as real files (including pictures made by Grok, Gemini and ChatGPT), chats deleted on the site (marked deleted: true), ChatGPT and Gemini Canvas, Deep Research and Claude Research reports, web sources as footnotes, thinking (such as DeepSeek's DeepThink) and tool calls, GitHub Copilot's repository and file references as links, Claude artifacts and Docs as files, and optionally earlier versions of edited and regenerated messages. It can hide API keys and passwords, skip chats by keyword or project, link chats from the Obsidian daily note and keep a table-of-contents note that links every saved chat. The extension's reader has search, service chips, chats grouped by day, Mermaid diagrams drawn, and PDF and HTML export; its toolbar popup is a launcher with a card per service (sync it, pause it, open its saved chats), Sync now and Pause for everything, and a sync log of every run. Long histories are saved 40 chats at a time, a minute apart. Requires Chrome 122+ or Microsoft Edge on a computer (it uses the File System Access API, which Firefox and Safari lack). ## Plans - Free: 10 chats, from all services together; Every feature, kept up to date, pictures and files too; Save any chat you open, until 10 are used; Notion, Google Drive and GitHub included; Search and read them in the extension; Import a data export to fill your 10 chats; No account needed. - Pro, $4 per month or $39 once (lifetime): everything in Free, plus Every chat you’ve ever had, on every service; All of them kept in sync on your schedule; All of them in Notion, Google Drive and GitHub; Import every chat in a data export, from any service; Fixes first when a chat site changes. - Pro is bought inside the extension (sign in with Google or email, pay with Stripe). The free version saves 10 chats in all, across all services together, with every feature, and keeps them up to date for good. A chat counts the first time it is saved, by a sync (the first ones save the latest chats), the Save button, saving on leave or an import. Once all 10 are used, no new chat is saved on Free; files of other chats stay on disk as they are. ## Pages - [Home](https://chattomarkdown.com/): What the extension does, with demos of each feature, privacy, setup and FAQ. - [Pricing](https://chattomarkdown.com/pricing/): Free, Monthly and Lifetime compared feature by feature, with billing FAQ. - [Guides](https://chattomarkdown.com/guides/): How-to guides for ChatGPT and Claude, and what is kept from the other services. - [Privacy policy](https://chattomarkdown.com/privacy/): Chats stay on the user's computer; the server stores only account email and plan for Pro, plus anonymous usage events kept 180 days. - [Terms](https://chattomarkdown.com/terms/) - [Contact](https://chattomarkdown.com/contact/): contact@shimanski.dev ## Guides - [How to export ChatGPT chats to Markdown](https://chattomarkdown.com/export-chatgpt-to-markdown/): Three ways to get ChatGPT chats out as .md files, from one answer to your whole history, and what each one keeps. - [How to save ChatGPT chats in Obsidian](https://chattomarkdown.com/chatgpt-to-obsidian/): Save ChatGPT chats in your Obsidian vault as notes with properties, and keep them updated as you keep chatting. - [How to back up your ChatGPT history](https://chattomarkdown.com/backup-chatgpt-history/): Keep a copy of every ChatGPT chat that stays up to date and survives deleted chats or a lost account. - [How to export your Claude conversations](https://chattomarkdown.com/export-claude-conversations/): What Claude’s data export gives you, how to request it, and how to turn it into readable files. - [How to save Claude chats to Obsidian](https://chattomarkdown.com/save-claude-chats-to-obsidian/): Save Claude chats as Obsidian notes, with artifacts and thinking, and Claude Projects as folders. ## Install - Chrome Web Store: https://chromewebstore.google.com/search/chat%20to%20markdown - Edge Add-ons: https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/search/chat%20to%20markdown Not affiliated with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, GitHub, Perplexity, xAI, DeepSeek or Obsidian.
