How to back up your ChatGPT history

Short answer

Request ChatGPT’s data export for a one-off snapshot (Settings → Data controls → Export data). For a backup that stays current, use Chat to Markdown: it writes every chat to a folder on your computer as Markdown, updates it on a schedule you pick, and keeps chats you delete in ChatGPT. Free backs up 10 chats; Pro, the whole history.

If you use ChatGPT for work or study, your chat history holds a lot you may want to find again. Right now it lives in one place: an account you don’t control.

What can go wrong

  • You delete a chat while tidying the sidebar, and later need it.
  • You lose access to the account: a work workspace you leave, a login you can’t recover, an account that is closed.
  • You can’t find it. Past a few hundred chats, the history is hard to search. A chat you can’t find is as good as lost.

What a good backup needs

  • Every chat, not just the ones you remembered to save.
  • Current: chats you continue are updated in the backup too.
  • Independent: a deleted chat on the site doesn’t delete the copy.
  • Versioned: when a chat changes, what it said before is still there.
  • Readable without special software, today and in ten years. Plain text formats like Markdown are the safe choice.

Three ways to back up

Data exportCopy and pasteChat to Markdown
Every chatYesOnly what you copyYes with Pro, 10 on Free
Stays currentNo, a snapshotNoYes, as often as every 15 minutes
Survives deleting a chatIf exported beforeYesYes
Keeps earlier versionsNo, one snapshotNoYes, up to 100 per chat
FormatJSON and one HTML pageWhatever you paste intoOne Markdown file per chat
EffortRequest, wait, download, repeatHighTwo minutes, once

Do the official export (Settings → Data controls → Export data) at least once anyway. It is the complete record OpenAI holds, including every branch of edited chats. It just doesn’t stay up to date. See exporting ChatGPT to Markdown for what is in it.

Set up an automatic backup

  1. Add Chat to Markdown to Chrome or Edge on the computer you use most.
  2. Choose a folder that is already part of your computer’s backups, for example inside Documents, or a cloud-synced folder like iCloud Drive, Dropbox or OneDrive. Pick Allow on every visit when Chrome asks.
  3. Turn on ChatGPT (Chrome asks to allow chatgpt.com), stay signed in there and press Start saving. Your latest chats are saved within a minute; with Pro, the rest of your history follows in the background.
  4. Leave Keep chats you delete and Keep a history of changes on in Settings → What to save (both are on by default). When a chat disappears from ChatGPT, its file stays and gets deleted: true in its properties. When a chat changes, the version before is kept in a hidden .chattomarkdown folder.

Have the export ZIP already? Pro can import it, so the backup is complete right away instead of filling in over time.

The backup is written by your browser to your disk. It never passes through our servers, so the only copies are the ones you control.

Using the backup

There is nothing to restore: the backup is already a folder of readable files. Search it with your computer’s file search, open it as an Obsidian vault, or grep it. Each file starts with the chat’s title, dates, model and a link back to the original, so you can always tell where a note came from.

Use Claude, Gemini or another AI too? The same folder takes chats from all 8 services it supports, each in its own subfolder; see exporting Claude conversations.

Questions

Can’t find your answer? Write to [email protected]. A person reads every message.

Doesn’t ChatGPT keep my history anyway?

Only while your account and the chats exist. If you delete a chat, lose the account or leave a work workspace, that history goes with it. A backup is a copy that doesn’t depend on any of that.

How big is a backup?

Small. Chats are text: a thousand chats is typically a few megabytes of Markdown. Images and attachments, if you keep them, are most of the size.

Is a backup on my own disk safe?

It is as safe as the rest of your files. Put the folder somewhere that is already backed up (Time Machine, File History, a synced cloud folder) and you have two copies without extra work.

How long does the first full backup take?

Chat to Markdown saves a long history 40 chats at a time, a minute apart, in the background. Roughly a thousand chats in half an hour. Importing ChatGPT’s own export (Pro) is faster for a very large history.
